February Staff Spotlight – Maria Iza Vargas Daguio

Maria with one of many satisfied patients!
Maria is an Oral Health Therapist who has been working with Green Valley Dental for 6 years! She absolutely loves her job and seeing her patients smiling and confident!

Maria graduated from the University of Sydney back in 2008 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Medical Science, and then again in 2012 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Oral Health! During her time studying, she received the Johnson & Johnson Pacific Prize and the NSW Dental Therapy Association Award for the Highest Achieving Student.

Maria specialises in children’s dentistry, providing dental care for children and adolescents up to the age of 18. She works with an emphasis on preventative care, and is passionate about helping children feel comfortable about visiting the dentist.

“I believe a trip to the dentist should be fun and pain-free,” says Maria. “I try to take on a ‘tell-show-do’ approach for my patients to guide them throughout their appointment and make it a positive experience!”

“As a mum myself, I treat my young patients as if they were my own, providing them with the best care possible. I also love that I get to educate parents and share tips on how to best look after their children’s teeth.”

Maria also specialises in Periodontics, providing scale and cleans and treating gum conditions for patients of all ages. She takes her time to explain the treatment process while guiding patients on how to maintain healthy teeth and gums.

“I am fortunate enough to have worked in several practices across Sydney and gained clinical experiences in many fields, including Orofacial Myology, Chronic Pain, TMJ and Sleep Dentistry. Because of this I try to adopt a holistic approach when treating all my patients. I look further beyond the teeth and try to consider the overall health of my patients. I check for any signs of sleep disorders which affect breathing, any abnormalities in the tonsils, mouth breathing, or irregular lip or tongue habits, and refer patients to appropriate specialists when necessary.”

Maria and her 2-year-old son during his first dental check up!

Maria continues to expand her knowledge of dentistry by attending courses and keeping up to date with the latest technology. She is also trained in Orthodontics and both take home and in-office teeth whitening.

“When I’m not in the clinic, I’m usually out with my family, spending time with my 2-year-old son. I also love going on food trips, exploring different places, taking pictures and travelling back to the Philippines where I grew up!”
