What is root canal treatment, and 7 frequently asked questions!

Root canals are a common dental treatment undertaken by many people, but there is a distinct lack of information available surrounding the procedure. This often leads to an air of uncertainty or fear for patients leading up to root canal therapy, as they are not quite sure what is coming their way! We are here to answer the common question “What is root canal treatment?”, as well as 7 other frequently asked questions!

What is root canal treatment?

Root canal treatment is a procedure that aims to save a badly damaged tooth from decay, disease or injury. Inside your tooth, beneath the white enamel and a hard layer called dentin, is a soft tissue called pulp. This tissue contains blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue, which help grow the root of your tooth during its development.

A fully developed tooth can survive without the pulp because the tooth continues to be nourished by the tissues surrounding it. During a root canal procedure, the nerve and pulp are removed, so that the area surrounding the tooth do not suffer further infection, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and sealed. You can also perform a root canal from the bottom of the tooth as well! It is called a retrograde root canal or apicoectomy.

7 frequently asked questions!

A root canal starts at approximately $920 for the x-rays, taking out the nerve, shaping one canal and filling the canal with a rubber material. Either a filling or a crown will also be required after treament.

Root canals are the best way to preserve teeth which have extensive disease. That being said, every tooth is different. Some teeth are more suitable for a root canal compared to others. Suitability means longevity. Patients have to consider how they will look after the root canal afterwards; most teeth that need root canals will also need a crown afterwards and that should come into consideration.

6) Should I get a root canal or extraction?

A root canal is the best option in order to keep the tooth. The dentist will advise you if the tooth is saveable for the medium to long term or if an extraction is the best long term solution. Ultimately, it is up to you and your unique situation.

7) How can I prevent needing a root canal?

Regulardental visits can pick up decay before it gets too deep where it may need a root canal. At the first sign of pain where there is a decay means that it is either very deep or your teeth are sensitive.
