A few things about Orthodontics that you may not know!

Feeling self-conscious or concerned about crooked or protruding teeth? Well, you’re not alone. Even celebrities share the same concerns! Luckily, thanks to Orthodontics, you can smile with a truckload of confidence.

What is Orthodontics?

Orthodontics is the speciality associated with the alignment of teeth, relationship of the teeth, jaw, and facial structures. Orthodontists are dentists who have done an additional post graduate qualification to specialise in this area of dentistry.

All Orthodontists have a background in dentistry, however not all dentists who practice Orthodontics are specialists. The treating Orthodontist may work in a team with other specialists including paediatric dentists and oral maxillofacial surgeons to ensure that patients obtain the best results and experience.

Orthodontics commonly involves the aesthetic correction of teeth, however there are more complex cases which may involve thorough assessment and management of dental deformities, missing teeth, facial profile, skeletal development, breathing difficulties and overall growth and development.

What kinds of Orthodontic treatment are there?

The most common Orthodontic treatment is braces, however there also other treatments that most people do not know about. These may include removable or a fitted appliances which are custom designed and made to achieve specific-alignment outcomes.

Some examples of other Orthodontic appliances include:

Palatal Expanders

Invsalign

Hawley Retainers

Twin Block

When is Orthodontic treatment carried out?

Patients of all ages may be involved in Orthodontic treatment, however there are two main phases to Orthodontic treatment:
  • Phase 1 often involves expansion of the jaw, utilising growth and correction of early detected issues. The age at which this is experienced can vary, but generally occurs between 7-8 years old.
  • Phase 2 is generally commenced after the exfoliation of all the primary teeth, and involves correction of the permanent dentition, often at 12+ years of age.

During Orthodontic treatment, particularly braces, you may be at an increased risk of developing dental problems such as tooth decay and gum disease. The primary reason for this is because the brackets, wires and fixtures of the teeth can make it more difficult to maintain acceptable oral hygiene. During Orthodontic treatment, it is imperative to maintain your routine dental visits, if not more frequently, to keep on top of any issues that may occur.
